Hi, and welcome to my blog, Caregiving in the Dark—a space for caregivers supporting loved ones with dementia. Blogging is a new world for me, and I never imagined myself as a blogger. But after several years of caring for my mother, I’ve learned lessons that might help others on this challenging, often lonely path.
Why “Caregiving in the Dark”?
When I first stepped into caregiving, I felt completely unqualified and ill-equipped—stumbling through unfamiliar terrain with little guidance. At times, the journey felt isolating, like navigating in darkness. But over time, I discovered something important: I was never truly alone. You are not alone. That realization is why I’m here—to create a space where we can share, learn, and support each other.
Finding Comfort in Shared Stories
When I began researching dementia caregiving, I sought out personal experiences from others in similar situations. Jann Arden and Gavin Crawford—two proud Canadians—have been open about their journeys caring for their mothers. Their honesty was both comforting and terrifying. Comforting, because it reassured me that others had walked this road before. Terrifying, because it gave me glimpses of what might lie ahead.
Like them, I want to be open and honest in these posts, because that’s what I found most helpful. The real and the raw. My stories will be firsthand experiences—the struggles, the small victories, and everything in between. However, out of respect for my mother and family, I will maintain their privacy. My parents are proud and private, and I want to ensure that sharing my journey does not cause pain to those I love.
What You’ll Find Here
- Personal caregiving stories – Honest reflections on the challenges and lessons of supporting a loved one with dementia.
- Practical strategies – Tips and tricks that help make daily caregiving a little easier.
- Community and connection – A space to feel heard, understood, and supported.
I want this blog to offer more than just words—I want it to be a resource for navigating the hard days, finding moments of joy, and reminding each other that we don’t have to do this alone.
Honouring My Mother
Over her 80+ years, my mother has brought joy to so many. Through kindness, generosity, and a lifelong dedication to teaching, she made a difference in people’s lives. This blog is my way of honouring her—by helping others the way she always did.
I hope you’ll join me.
